/ Blog / Is Guinness Healthy?
In celebration of completing our Walk/Run/Bike to Dublin challenge, an interesting perspective from the world of beer...
Some health experts are seeing the glass half full when it comes to enjoying a pint after work or after a workout in terms of potential health benefits. Many sources have 'brewed' over the topic, even making the argument that Guinness stout triumphs over other beers when it comes to comparing health factors. Sources such as CNN Health and Insider have debated this issue. One source, EatingWell, consults beer expert Charles Bamforth, Ph.D. about such claims.
The potential health benefits from moderate consumption of beer include nutrients such as antioxidants, B Vitamins, fiber, silicons, and prebiotics. These are all thanks to the main ingredient in beer, barley- a whole grain. Barley and hops have also been considered to lower cholesterol and reduce the risks for heart disease. Bamforth claims Guinness is a beer containing higher sources of these nutrients, therefore making it the healthier choice.
Even though most know Guinness for being heavy and filling some say it is also lower in calories than most other popular big names beers. This is because it has on average a lower ABV. And since the main source of calories in beer comes from alcohol Guinness is naturally lower in calories.
It’s certainly worth noting, however, that Guinness Brewery does not advertise any health benefits to drinking its beer. In the end, the jury is still out on the final verdict regarding beer as a ‘healthy’ addition to a person’s routine. While “researchers from the University of Wisconsin found drinking Guinness offered more protective effects against heart conditions than lagers”, other research points to sustaining from alcohol altogether as the only truly healthy lifestyle choice.

It’s that time of year once again... when many seek to turn over a new leaf and better themselves in various ways by pursuing a self-prescribed New Year Resolution. January through February represents the time of the year many new faces will show up in gyms nationwide as people pursue the annual “it’s going to happen this year” bodymake-overplan. Unfortunately, by the time April graces our calendars most of these new faces disappear due to unfulfilled and often unrealistic goals. The reality is most people do not like to work out, and only consider it because they understand it is good for them. A major problem is a lack of knowledge, a lack of realistic thought process, and a lack of a support plan. Negative behaviors are what has created the problems, so it is positive behaviors that are needed to fix them.View
